The family of the late Singaporean artist and architect, Ho Kok Hoe, is putting up his former home, a Good Class Bungalow (GCB) located in Camden Park off Adam Road, for sale. The property, which has a freehold tenure, is priced at $55.888 million.Ho originally bought the property in 1968 and lived there until he passed away at the age of 93 in 2015. The family has held the property for almost five decades and the 29,918 square feet site was occupied by a single-storey bungalow when Ho first acquired it. He later renovated the house in 1968 while preserving much of its original charm. The property was transferred to his three sons, Ho Kah Kui, Ho Kah Chun, and Ho Kah Keh in 2008, each having a one-third stake in the property.The property features a swimming pool, a terraced garden, a large koi pond, and an 8,611 square feet residence. The current house has nine en-suite bedrooms, spacious living and dining areas, and a study. The house also carries a nostalgic feel, evoking a bygone era and a life shaped by creativity, as Ho was a prominent architect, painter, and art collector. Ho was once the president of the Singapore Art Society from 1954 to 1968 and again from 1981 to 1983.Ho’s father, Ho Kwong Yew, and grandfather were also artists and architects. His father, the first local Asian to be registered as an architect in Singapore, passed the inaugural professional examination conducted by the Board of Architects after the introduction of the Architect’s Ordinance in 1927. Ho followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued architecture, receiving a degree from Sydney, Australia, in 1951. He worked for a while in Swan & Maclaren, Singapore’s oldest architectural firm, before establishing his own firm, Ho Kwong Yew & Sons in honor of his father. His brothers joined him in the late 1980s, and they ran the practice together. Ho designed notable buildings such as the National Museum of Malaysia, the Haw Par Tiger Balm Building in Jurong, and the St Andrew’s Village school complex in Potong Pasir. He also ventured into politics briefly and won the River Valley seat under the Labour Front banner in the 1957 City Council elections.Decades after the house’s first renovation, Ho carried out a more extensive renovation and expansion, adding two more storeys in 1997. The patio, which was last updated in 1968, was enclosed during the renovation, providing a larger space for entertaining.
