Over 29000 Hdb Flats Selected 407 Mil Upgrading
By this time next year, over 29,000 HDB flats will undergo essential improvements under the latest round of the Home Improvement Programme (HIP). The programme was first introduced in 2007 with the aim of helping flat owners address common maintenance issues that arise due to wear and tear in older flats. In a press release on Feb 16, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) announced that over $407 million has been allocated for the upgrading works in selected flats located in various estates including Bedok, Bukit Batok, Bukit Merah, Bukit Panjang, Chua Chu Kang, Hougang, Jurong West, Pasir Ris, Queenstown, Sengkang, Tampines, Toa Payoh, and Woodlands. This brings the total number of flats selected for the HIP to 494,000, with close to 381,000 flats having undergone upgrades since 2007. In an announcement made by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, it was noted that the HIP has been a popular programme among flat owners, with 9 out of 10 eligible flats benefiting from it. The government has allocated approximately $4 billion to the HIP and around $150 million to the Enhancement for Active Seniors (Ease) programme since their launches in 2007 and 2012 respectively. The HIP ensures the basic safety needs of residents are taken care of by carrying out essential improvements such as repairing spalling concrete and ceiling leakages caused by wear and tear. These essential improvements are fully funded by the government for households occupied by Singapore citizens. Along with these essential improvements, flat owners can also opt for optional improvements including upgrades to bathrooms and toilets, a new entrance door and grille gate, and a new refuse chute hopper. The cost of these optional improvements is subsidised by the government, with families occupied by Singapore citizens paying only 5% of the cost, depending on the type of flat. Since 2012, the Ease programme has been offered as part of the HIP, allowing flat owners to install senior-friendly fittings to improve accessibility in their homes. These improvements include grab bars, ramps, and slip-resistant treatment for toilet and bathroom tiles, and are subsidised up to 95% by the government for families occupied by Singapore citizens. With the latest round of HIP, the government is committed to ensuring a safe and comfortable home for all Singaporeans.
